OOHH! I hate em too!! This time of year they are especially bad. I make a trap using a jar. Put a piece of banana or some very ripe grapes (you can speed up the riping in the microwave) in it, then make a funnel with the hole being very small. I use a paper plate for my funnel. Then tape (or secure) the funnel into the jar. I think all of the traps posted in the previous answers will work, too. Just try to get through this until the first frost or freeze!

Purchase a food screen and cover your bananas like this one...

Also, if the fruit flies get really bad then set out a glass of white wine with two drops of dish soap in it and leave it on the counter. The flies are attracted and will drown. Change once a day until problem clears up.

I just got this in an email...it's worth a try. Good luck!

Goodbye Fruit Flies To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass fill it 1/2" with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dishwashing liquid, mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever!

You can try a very fine mesh food cover, however - fruit flies seem to come with the fruit. So if it is bananas - better eat them faster. Other fruit, put it in the fridge. They hate the cold and their eggs do not hatch:0)

I worked at a bar where fruit flies can be a problem. We put a small amount of red vinegar into a shallow dish, covered it with plastic wrap, and then poked a hole into it. This "fly trap" worked so good that it had to be changed every couple of days.
