First of all, it's the Space Needle, not the Space Tower...That is probably why you can't find the answers you need on a search engine.
I have an annual membership there, so I'm there about once a month on average just to take in the view. Here is a link to some fun facts about it, that should also answer any questions you have:

Ok. It was built for a World's Fair, 1962 I think. The views from the top are great, but the deck has been ringed around with all kinds of safety wire since the last skydiver jumped off a few years ago. I don't know, but I'm sure there have been suicides as well. Fireworks are set off on July 4th and the New Year every year; they're pretty good. You can buy all kinds of tourist crap in the gift shop at the top, but if they still have them, the wooden slugs are the best. There's a really lifelike one you can hang on the lip of a coffee mug; it's great.
It costs about 10 bucks to go up now, if I remember. Too much. And they make you have your picture taken, and try to sell it to you later.
The restaurant at the top is too pricey; don't go for the food. Don't get me wrong, the food is good, but it's on a par with a lot of restaurants in Seattle that serve 'Pacific Northwest Cuisine.' If you go, it's the revolving view that's worth the money, at least once. A good place to take someone you want to impress.
They paint the top pretty frequently. It must have a foot of paint layers on it now. There's a weather camera on it you can access online that will show you the sky all the way to Rainier on a good day; I check it when I want to know the weather, because Seattle weathermen aren't very reliable.
It's in the Seattle Center; right next to the EMP, Paul Allen's funky music museum. Architecturally, they complement one another, oddly enough.
Hope this helps!

When you do more online research pay special attention to the information about the prank a local news station did re: the Space Needle. They did an April Fool's joke on TV, showing pictures of rubble and all that. The station made everyone believe that the Space Needle fell over. I saw the news cast shortly after leaving Seattle (the same day) and was in shock! I couldn't believe it. Many people were fooled and that station later apologized.
