Amino acids

The people who said amino acids are right. There are 20. Proteases are enzymes that carry out the digestion of a protien. Essential amino acids can only be obtained by the diet. Non-essential ones can be synthesised by the body.
Amino acids that aren't used to build the body's own proteins (muscle, hair, enzymes etc) are broken down in the liver to release urea which is toxic, this is then excreted by the kidneys in urine.

Proteins are broken down first into polypeptides (short chains of amino acids) and then into amino acids by different proteases.

There are 20 different amino acids and your body uses them to synthesise the different proteins it needs. Some of them are also used in other chemical reactions such as the synthesis of serotonin from tryptophan.

Some of the amino acids are 'essential amino acids' these are the amino acids that you can not synthesise. The 'non essential amino acids' can be synthesised from different precursors even if they are not present in your diet.

some of them are first broken down to small strands of Amino acids (polysacharides) some other proteins are digested to single amino acids directly...it depends on the element that is breaking down the protein
