A lot of times in discussions of depression in my classes we'll get to the subject of "tunnel vision." It's not that severely depressed people don't care about others, it's that they don't have the drive or energy to develop a relationship. It's the same as the terrible question of why depressed people commit suicide without thinking of all the pain they'll cause. The fact is, someone can be so deep in a hole that it's hard to see out. Clinical depression colors how you see your life, if everything inside someone is negative, anything that happens, including people that care about them, can be perceived as negative also or not even seen at all. That's why it's so important for someone who is severely depressed to get professional help.

Kind of hard to get emotionally involved when you are depressed. You can't control your own feelings. Since its hard for someone depressed to deal with emotional good or bad, it would be harder to take someone elses feelings into count.

Unfortunately many suffering from this ailment who could help themselves turn to convenient but useless quick-fixes like sudden hyper-religeon instead of seeking expert help - namely: a doctor of psychology or psychiatry, either of which offer a much better chance of successfull healing.
In any event - good luck to you.
