I have read Lord of the Rings and really enjoyed. I have also read the first book in the Dragonlance but couldn't get excited about it. Right now I'm reading the Harry Potter books but am almost finished. Any suggestions on a new fantasy series to pick up?

Try Eragon, that's a good one, also there's a movie coming out at the end of the year so try read it first! There is a sequel called Eldest too.

Try Dragonlance again if you can, it does pick up, its what turned me into a fantasy fan fifteen years ago!!! That's also got an animated movie out next year i think it is with Kiefer Sutherland voicing Raistlin.

If you like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, you'll like the Dune series. Also Anne Rice - Interview with a Vampire, The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned were the first and the best. There's also the Dark Materials trilogy, Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. And don't forget Terry Pratchett's Discworld series - I'm always plugging these but they really are good, there's nearly 30 of them now and every one different so they'll keep you busy for a while! Also try The HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy series by Douglas Adams - so much better than the film.
Hope this helps!

Definately anything Anne McCaffrey! She has been a master of fantasy for over 30 years and her son is following successfully in her footsteps.

Not only has she created Pern, a planet of dragon riders, but also Dinosaur Planet and others. Once you've read enough of her stories, you'll see how a minor character in one book shows up as an ancestor to a character in another series or is the main focus of another book altogether.

There are also books such as the Dragon Lover's Guide to Pern which is full of all the technology, recipes, crochet patterns and animal husbandry information you could ever want!

Once a year Pern enthusiasts gather with countless others at the annual DragonCon held in Atlanta, GA. I went in 2005 and there were over 30,000 participants. I was thrilled to meet Ms. McCaffrey in person, as well as other authors and celebrities.

Terry Brooks- The Shannara series
Robert Asprin- The Myth series- easy reading, but very amusing

Douglas Adams- Life the Universe and Everything, So Long and Thanks for all the Fish, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe- the whole series- I read it a long time ago so I don't remember all the names, but it was really good. Kinda sci-fi though.

Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom- Cory Doctorow- once again kinda sci-fi, but an amazing read.

Dianne Duanne's Wizard series,
Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series
(masquerades as Sci Fi, but is fantasy),
Pier Xanthony's Xanth series (1rst 3 are the best),
The Deryni series (Katherine Kurtz?),
The Incompleat Enchanter (Pratt and somebody),
David Edding's Pawn of Prophecy etc
(1rst one, 2nd series just a repeat),
Christopher Stasheff's Warlock series
(masquerades as Sci Fi, but is fantasy),

bunch of singles = The Reality Matrix John Dalmas,
The Playmaster Dalmas & someone,
Red Planet,
Moon is a Harsh Mistress,
Stranger in a Strange Land,
Time enough for Love All Robert Heinlein
(definately Sci Fi, but good),
2255 AD Thea Alexander,
Anything and everything by Andre Norton

If you like LOTR, try the Paksenarrion series by Elizabeth Moon.

Also try Tad Williams, the Sword of Shanara series, and Robert Jordan. All of these have the same flavor. You can also try George RR Martin's Winter of Fire series.

For more of the HP crowd, try Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising series, Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles, and anything by Garth Nix.

Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series is fantastic! There is space travel, pscyhic powers, hereditary caste systems, magically endowed objects, alien species and all sorts of good things! I loved Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter so you might love the Darkover books too. The bonus is that there are a ton of them!

The only one I've read myself is the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, so I definitely recommend it.

Friends of mine also recommend the Death Gate Cycle, by Margaret Weis, and books by Guy Gabriel Kay (don't know the titles, though).

Of course, if you haven't read The Chronicles of Narnia, or the Lord of the Rings, read those as well, they're classics.

There's The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan... and also The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. Another one, if you like dragons at all, is The Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey. If you like vampires and don't mind romance novels, you might like The Dark Series by Christine Feehan and The Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon. They are technically romance novels, but they have more to the plot than rampant sex... most of the time the sex is somehow a catalyst in the plot. Any way... happy reading! And I hope I helped.
