That digitaldreamdoor link is very good and there are lots of good players there. However, one of my favorites, Steve Goodman, is not on the list. Goodman could play hulahoops around some of the players on the list.

Otherwise, I have scads of favs, including Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Leo Kottke, Carlos Santana, Chet Atkins, George Harrison, Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell, Chris Hayes (Huey Lewis and the News), George Thorogood and John Fogerty. I don't know their names but the lead guitarists for Queen, Pink Floyd and the Cars are excellent, too. John Lennon and Paul McCartney could play some great leads, too -- that's actually McCartney playing the snarly lead in George Harrison's song, "Taxman."

Well, if not matter the order I could suggest...

Jimmi Hendrix
David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple)
Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath)
Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin)
Steve Howe (Yes)
Rod Price (Foghat)
Mark Knoppler (Dire Straits)
Tom Scholz (Boston)
Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen)
Alvin Lee (Ten Years After)
Jeff Beck
Gary Moore
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Santana
B.B. King
Eric Clapton

They are the foundation of the modern guitar riffs, and some people whom keep this legacy and more...

Steve Vai
Joe Satriani
Ynwie Malmsteen
John Petrucci
David T. Chastain

Also don't forget the acustic guitar masters, if they weren't good everybody could play acustic guitar as professionals...

Andres Segovia
Paco de Lucia

Hendrix was an innovator in many ways, but I have to go with Jeff Beck. He's been pushing the limits of the guitar for 40 years, and never got lazy or rested on his laurels from the 60s. Check his stuff out on youtube.com if you're interested. Simply amazing. But there are many other great ones, too, of course.

The list is purely subjective.
One should break any list down to musical style and influence, record sales and longevity.

I would agree that Jimi Hendrix is one of the most influential guitarists (and Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, etc...all great rock gods!).
But what about Les Paul?
Leo Kottke?
Django Reinhardt?
Chet Atkins?
Andres Segovia?
These people had phenomenal influence on style, technique, innovation and invention.

I would suggest that whomever YOU really like ARE the best guitarists ever.
