My friend asked me to post this question about terrible itching all over her body. She is approx. 6 weeks along. She says the itch never goes away & it is on all different parts of her body. She keeps scratching, but can never satify the itch. It sounds crazy, but she is deperate. The doctor says to quit taking the prenatal vitamins & see what happens. She quit taking them, and still no relief. Has anyone else ever heard of this?

It's not uncommon to feel itchy in some areas, particularly around your growing belly and breasts as your skin stretches to accommodate them. Pregnancy hormones may also be partly to blame.

About two-thirds of women also find that their palms and the soles of their feet get red and sometimes itchy during pregnancy. Experts think that this condition, which usually disappears right after delivery, is caused by an increase in estrogen. It's less common among African Americans than among lighter-skinned women.

Finally, you may find that certain conditions that normally make you itchy (such as dry skin, eczema, or food allergies) make you even itchier when you're pregnant.

Avoid hot showers and baths, which can dry your skin and make the itching worse. Use mild soap and be sure to rinse it off well and towel off lightly. Then slather on the moisturizer, preferably an unscented one because some scents can cause irritation. Try an occasional warm oatmeal bath (you can buy pre-mixed oatmeal bath preparations in drugstores). Wear loose cotton clothing and avoid going out in the heat of the day, since heat can intensify the itching.

I had that problem on my 1st pregnancy. If it's not a reaction to the prnatal vitamins. Try keeping the skin moisturized. Your baby is draining, feeding and surviving off your body's nutrition, so you need to stay hydrated and keep your skin moisturized. It will help when your skin starts to streach out, also reduces the chance of strech marks. Maybe it could be a reaction to food or medication. Check with the doctor if it continues. Try some Cortizone 10, I use this for extremely dry & itchy skin.

I was pregnant with twins and I had the same problem I itched everywhere and the doctor told me that some women experience different symptoms when pregnant but I would definitely not stop taking the vitamins. Tell her to just use a strong lotion that worked for me.

Drink more water. If you dehydrate your skin will become dry and then itching. Not to mention the gaining of the weight and stretching of the skin will also cause itching.

Our skin is sooo extremely sensitive when we are pregnant, well more than others, but still. She should try to use a more mild soap , shampoo, lotion and laundry detergent. If she is using those things with lots of perfumes and chemicals it might be irritating her skin. If she wears lotion tell her to try "Palmers, Cocoa Butter, for stretch marks" It's specifically for pregnant women. it's really mild and makes your skin silky.
