I for one don't think a celebrity should have anymore political sway than the next person. But it makes sense that they do. They are powerful, recognizable, accessible, and entertaining. They are easier to listen to and relate to than politicians.
I don't think it makes a person an idiot. Anyone who has gained interest in politics or international affairs from something a celebrity OR a politician has said or done is wonderful. If a celebrity's face creates awareness and can affect change, where's the problem?
**I misunderstood the question...if you're talking more like, why do we care about who Britney Spears is banging rather than what our government does. And I'd be with you, I think it's disgusting that people care about such trivial things when there are much bigger things happening globally**

Most Americans are not the idiots.....the celebrities that THINK they ARE political leaders are. Believe me, we see through it (at least those of us that are not idiots.)

Because we are rich and spoiled. Our lives are so comfortable that we can ignore the important things in life and pay more attention to entertainment.
