I'm looking for nice place to stay that's close to the ski slopes and a shuttle ride away from the casinos in the evening. I'd like to avoid driving if at all possible. We ski mostly blues and greens. I'm also interested in how the skiing compares the the skiing in Colorado...like Winter Park, Vail, or Keystone.

Stay at Harrahs or Harvey's in Lake Tahoe (They have their own Casino). Cesar's is very close by as well, but not as fun. You can get a multi-day lift ticket to all of the resorts there. If you ski Blues and greens, then you'll probably like it better than Colorado. Have fun and don't forget to hit the outdoor hot tub after a tiring day on the slopes.

About the snow conditions:

Unlike, say Utah, you can pretty much count on the West Coast snow to be wet and heavy. And it hardpacks (compressed, ice like qualities) quickly because of the weather being sunny, overcast, sunny, overcast, etc. We'll get layers of new snow that turn to hardpack and then more soft, wet snow on top of that, and again... which is why they are constantly making snow and grading the snow early mornings. The further north you go, from southern California, the more those layers are deeper. Obviously because of the snowfall is more frequent.

Because of this, you don't want super sharp edges on your equipment because you'll tend to catch all the hardpack's bumps that lie underneath as you break through the upper new snow and hit the hardpack below. Although a good wax is crucial to keep you moving quickly. The quicker you move, the less opportunity to hit hitched or affected by the hardpack snow.

Some of the best "snow" in California is at Mammoth Mountain. It has fluffy, less wet quality. After a good snowstorm, skiers are knee deep in fresh, air like snow that is easy to maneuver in and just plain fun.

Reno and Tahoe aren't exactly close to one another, particularly if you are referring to South Tahoe (which is what most people are referring to). North Tahoe is less touristy than South, more of a village, and better skiing- my opinion. South Tahoe has the big casinos (Caesar's, Harrah's) and bigger mountain (Heavenly), but it's infinitely more crowded.

You should have a great time, especially if you stay out of Reno.
