They get paid. My sister took her ex to small claims court. Producers from the show noticed thier case and asked if she wanted to be on Judge Joe Brown, they offered her $250. She said she didn't want to do it, but eventually they upped the offer to $1000 and she took it.

Probably for their 15 minutes of fame. These courts are not even real courts -- and the judges are not actually judges, but merely arbitrators. The participants sign papers agreeing to arbitrate before they go on the show. The courts and the judge are "dressed up" as real courts and judges, but are just for show. Some people do not realize that this is not the way a real courtroom functions or the way a real (and respectable) judge would conduct his or herself.

Most people sue others out of pure frustration (just talking about civil litigation - when one person sues another for a car accident or loaning money - not like Enron).

Many attorneys will try to handle disputes using conflict management and resolution, but when people can't make it work, to the courthouse we go.

Now think about the people who are on reality TV. People who are often irrational, easy and quick to temper, drama, drama, drama. After all, that's what makes good TV. I am sure that the collision between a) people who want to sue on hilarious things and b) people who want to be on reality TV is a fairly large group of people.

Bottom Line: People want to be heard. That's why they go to a judge, to be heard and told they're right. If you are a super drama reality tv type, then where better to hear "You're Right" and say "In your face!" than on TV??

Because they are going to file the papers anyways, so may as well go on TV.

Right. If I believed that these people were real, then I'd be a bigger idiot then they are.

These are obviously actors paid to play into stereotypes while acting out these mundane cases. I don't know it is scripted, or an improv act, but it is not real. It just could not be.

I guess because they want to make the other person look stupid to the world if they have enough evidence and if they know their going to win
