If it's edible it must be alive. If it's alive it will struggle to get away from the web, which will in turn make the web vibrate, more than just the once when it lands. It is the continuous vibration of the web that brings the spider out and tells him/her there's soemthing good to eat on the web.

Most things are edible to a spider. It has a good sense of smell. Most insects that are not edible have bright colours on them or they mimic the colours of a wasp eg yellow and black. So a spider would know this by sight and smell

The spider checks first by tugging its own web in the direction of the object. If it is something alive it will try to free itself. if it is a leaf or something the spider can detect this, usually by sight using its 8 eyes.

well, I am not sure, but it bases everything on movement and the vibrations in the web caused by a live insect. If you were to throw a dead one in there it would be interesting if it would know what to do with it.That's really all I know about spiders :)

It cant until it goes and investigates. Actually in insect terms a spider is something of giant. There are insects so small you cant see them with the naked eye yet they are sully functioning insects

housekeeping duties - twigs, leaves and other unedibles that fall on the web are cleaned and removed off the web. oh yeah, like the other answerer brought out it has to be alive. so even if you were to throw a dead insect on the web it will treat it like trash and void it off. it wants fresh food.

actually spiders may have lots of eyes but they are blind, how would you know if someone stuck a lump of wood in with your spag bol, just cos they are insects dont mean they are dumb, if its not looking, smellin and feeling right then its tossed right outta the web!

spiders have eight eyes (i think!) so i guess lots of little eyes can improve their vision

it all depends on the vibrations..... it's prey will struggle and send out that signal ..... apiece of leaf or speck of dust will not
