my sister in law has to rent privately, does anyone know what the highest amount of housing benefit one person (with two young kids) could get per week. when u rent privately the rent is usually very high so we was just wondering what is the highest amount they could award someone...so we could work out what type of price range to look out.

each area has a 'rent officer' who will assess what is a fair rent for the place and the people. this is usually done by an ' independent assessing' officer from the regional tax office. contact your housing benefit officer and ask them to give you a contact number. for example in my area a single person in a one bedroom flat will get £70 to £75 per week and will have to make up the difference as the rent is actually £85. some properties are pre=assessed and you can find out which from the HB office

get in contact with the local council and they will tell you what a fair rent will be for two bed flats/ houses ie two bed flat 150/ week .The one you want is 170/week then you have to find the odd 20.your income also taken into account if any.

every council differs in this. in one house i was in where my rent was 390 a month i didnt have to pay any extra because the council covered it all.
im not 100% sure if council will tell you without filling out the forms because it all depends on all the information you give ( savings, other money etc)on to how much you will be entitled to, but its worth a try

Best to ask your local Council Housing Officer, it is the Council and not the DWP who award and pay Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit.

they can pay up to £100 a week irent myself and thats what i get it all depends on your current situation and they even pay this amount in sought after areas, you can also get rent reviews where they might pay more towards your rent if it is to high just enquire to the council of your chosen area to be sure.

if your sister in law is on income support then she should get full amount if not then it goes on how much the rent is and how much she earns.
