If I am actively doing something else (like surfing the net) while on hold I have more tolerance. If not I am gone in under a minute (unless they have some critical info that I must have to deal with a problem then I am stuck there for a long as it takes)

It depends on how badly you need/want to speak to the person on the other end of the phone!

Once, the phone rang at my house. I answered it, and I got an automated message from my phone provider saying there was an "important message" and I needed to hold to speak to an operator. I held for eight minutes only to be told that they had a special promotion on long distance! Boy oh boy, did I yell at that operator! I know it wasn't her fault, but if you pester the employees your complaint will work its way up the ladder!

that really depends on your patience level and the person you are holding for. but typically a minute is a good enough. If it is personal and someone put you on hold to answer the other line, much quicker than that. It does not take that long to tell the other person i have another call or to come back to you and say i'll call you back
