I constantly hear on the news about crime victims who never locked their doors, and assumed their small town locations and schools were perfectly safe. Is this some form of strange denial of reality?

I live in a town that is the epitome of a "safe town", yet in my neighborhood alone there have been 15 robberys in the past year (theres only 20 houses in my neighborhood)

I think people give themselves the false illusion of saftey because either:

They have been there for a long time and nothing has happened so they feel safe (my case)

Or

They know that nowhere is safe so they just "pretend" to be safe and after awhile their pretending becomes their reality

Or yet another,

They want to believe in humanity. They want to believe that no one would hurt them and that they are safe.

hope i was of some help

Yes, because there is a huge part of the human personality that wants everything to be stable and secure, even tho it never can be. Even all locked up, all you are doing is making sure that the person stealing from you has a great deal invested in their technology inorder to be able to steal from you.

There was a question earlier about 'why don't we think the rules apply to us?' that relates to this. We want the illusion of stability so much that when we get insecure about it, we find a rule that we can violate, get caught, and get punished to be reassured that the world is run by rules, that everything is stable and comfortable. This illusion is doomed to be disrupted, and depending on how insanely you try to 'hold stability in place' that disruption is bound to mess with your mind, your perceptions, and thus your world.

Go to Canada...And go to any neighborhood...go up to a house...and open the door...Chances are...it WILL be open. Watch Canadian news...they won't show murders...Go to a place in Canada that borders the United States...ask about crime rates...cross the border...and ask about crime rates in the United States....it is a SIGNIFICANT difference...
Look around Canada...they are just as racially diverse as us...
I'm not saying these victims were Canadian, but it's amazing to see how much safer and how much more people get along just next door.
There's something wrong with our society.

I used to think that I lived in a relatively safe area until my son's friend's mother was murdered in her own home. I guess you can never be too safe. Fortunately, I grew up with a mom that was paranoid about locking doors and I am just as vigilant. I think that sometimes we just get comfortable with what is familiar, when in reality we should be weary of what is around us at all times.

No, Evil isn't everywhere. At least, not the criminal kind. It exists in pockets, and tends to occur in some areas with far higher frequency than others. So people who live where crime is minimal tend to forget it, because it's not likely to happan to them on any given day. It's the same phenomena that prevents you from spending your lottery winnings before the numbers are drawn. While you know someone's going to win, and that it could be you, you know that it's not likely going to be you on any given day. So you don't buy the ferrarri, because ou don't have any reasonable anticipation that it will happen. Same with people in low crime areas, they don't have any anticipation that it will happen to them, on that day.

Really everywhere isn't safe, but that doesn't mean places cant be safe. everyone wasn't to deny that evil is everywhere, and when that evil hits them, they believe in it more but still want to deny it.
