The flap that opens up to let the water out when the toilet flushes gets stuck and does not fall back down after the water level goes down. As a result the water continues to run until you push the flap down manually so the toilet will refill.

Does anyone have any suggestions about how to correct this problem?

The flapper valve usually attaches to the overflow chute on two "ears". Check this connection and make sure one of the sides hasn't popped out of the ear. Also, check the chain from the flapper valve to the handle and make sure it's not hanging up on something.

My guess is that it's installed incorrectly. If it was replaced recently you might want to re-check the work. It may also be the wrong type of flapper. Then there's the idiot reason--the chain may be too short.

Shut the water off, drain cistern, replace the whole valve. Refill. Sorted.

I would buy a new stopper. The other one is probably old. It may be misshaped
