Because they are Americans?
No, seriously now, this is really a disgrace in the US, this prudishness. I am from Germany, and we always went swimming nude in public places (we have certain places for just that), and of course you can sunbathe nude in your own yard.
But I have heard already from another german immigrant that the americans are crazy here, they have even laws against that.
So, in the end we moved out to an extremely rural area, with no human neighbours close, and there I can walk naked through my yard all the times (well, now it is getting to cold for that).
This is sad, but I guess it is the only way to do it in America. They have no nudity culture here. They even think being nude has to do with sexuality, and therefore it must be something bad (not understandable for me, but that is what I heard).

Beacuse the nieghborhood is not a nudist camp. Find something to block their view and sunbathe till you burn. LOL
