The red comes from broken blood vessels which are situated near the surface. Poor diet, vitamin deficiency and ,yes, alcohol abuse are all major factors but it is really the totality of such a harsh, dangerous and potentially fatal lifestyle. A lifestyle which is rarely chosen as a preference to Henley, Ox bridge or the Guards.

For most it's because they are out in all weathers, whatever it may be - rain, wind or shine.
For some few, it's because they drink too much.

because they are cold and can't afford so much food so they are pale which makes them look like they have rosey cheeks
