how do you make external hard drive resync with itunes for purposes of IPOD usage post-disconnect (big-100G)?

I'm novice with IPOD (have Nano and loaded external hard drive) and Itunes (have pc) so any basics would be helpful.

You go to the edit tab in itunes and scroll down to preferences if you have i and itunes older then the 7.0 version if you have the 7.0 version i believe it's changed to options. then you go through options and click the ipod tab then there is a choice to automaticlly update your ipod. or you can choose certain playlists to update and whether or not you want checked or unchecked songs to be in your ipod. unchecked songs tend to be the ones you don't like but have.
