During my ultrasound it hurt in someplaces and I don't remember that from any other ultrasound before and I don't know if it is just me being paranoid but it looked like the person was taking pictures of not just the baby. She would put it in some spots, even the top of my growing belly and take pictures away from were the baby could be. Like on my left side (which hurt the most) she would put the wand on my stomach and face it out towards the left away from my uterus. Now it has been awhile since I had a ultrasound for a baby besides my quicky ones looking for a baby and a heartbeat. But is this normal procedure and I am worrying for nothing or not. My doctors appt was canceled yesturday because my OB was called to deliver and I don't see him till tommorrow afternoon and I am worried something is wrong.

This is my second pregnancy so I have done it, but don't remember them checking the side or it hurting.

I want to thank you, some of you have really calmed my concerns, I was worried about all the pictures, but after your answers I feel much better. I was supposed to see my doctor but like I said he was called to delivery and probably never even saw my results.

MANY pics are taken during ultrasounds. :) They take pics of fluid, ovaries, blood flow to the placenta, the overall shape and size of the uterus, they measure all aspects of baby including brain and legs and arms, they take several pics of the placenta and umbilical cord. And for me my US hurt when she would put the wand on a spot where baby was lying bunched up- he'd push back at her. Today I had one because i have high amniotic fluid levels and she asked me to turn on my right side since baby was facing funny so she could get a good pic of him... she didn't tell me what she was looking for really but everything came out fine- I already spoke with my dr. about the results. So not to worry- if there were any BIG problems they would have sent you straight to your dr's office or to the ER/OB floorto speak with you about the problems/correct them.

Jeezzus! Someone just had to tell you a doom and gloom story, then tell you they're sure you baby is alright.

The length of time an ultrasound takes can vary by a lot of factors. One of the simplest would be that the technician was new, and not very good at using the equipment. Just like taking a picture with any camera, some pictures may not come out clearly and need to be taken several times. It could even be something like the machine not working properly. Those same things might account for why she was moving the wand all over the place. People often think the people who perform these test are highly skilled heath care providers. The truth is, they are only trained to use the equipment, not diagnose, and often aren't particularly keen on what they're even seeing.

The pain you felt during the test could simply have been her pressing down on a spot where your baby had a heel or elbow. The density of bone would make the ultrasound image hard to capture and cause her to have to move it around to different spots to get a better angle.

You don't say where you're currently feeling pain in your abdomen. Abdominal pain can occur for many reasons and it may have nothing to do with your pregnancy at all. If it become very uncomfortable, or worsens, go to your local emergency department.

I suspect that if your OB/GYN was in possession of information that was detrimental to you or your baby's health, he would either have called, bumped up your appointment, or made sure you didn't leave his office without seeing you.

I suggest you relax and wait until you talk to him, before jumping to any conclusions.

Best of luck with your new family addition!

Dont worry about this. It hurt when I had my ultrasound just because they were pressing so hard and that area is stretched and sensitive. I wouldnt be suprised if I even bruised from it. They are just trying to get in deep to see everything. I have a normal healthy little 2 year old now. So dont worry about it. Also they are going to be checking all over to make sure everything is ok around the baby.

Ok, this is normal. It does hurt because they are puttingpressure on your stretched uterus and pushing on the baby which is in turn pushing on you. They have to look at other things not just the baby...like the cerivix and the placenta. It depends on where the placenta is at, this will determine where theywill have to look. They also have to measure the fluid around the baby.

When I had my ultrasound they had to check my placenta which was very low lying and because of that they had to use a transvaginal ultrasound which goes up your vagina to see it.

They need to see other things than just the baby to make sure baby can come out ok.

This happened w/ my last baby that I lost. It hurt really bad during the ultrasound and it last 30 minutes, I was worried something was wrong and I didn't believe her b/c I had never had a 30 minute US before. I lost my baby almost 2 weeks later due to an umbilical cord accident
Pray and pray some more, I'm sure your baby is fine

I've had quite a few ultrasounds, and some of them have been uncomfortable, to the point of having bruises on my tummy afterwards. This has especially been true early on in pregnancy, when it's harder to find the stuff they're looking for.

I wouldn't worry, the tech just sounds like she was being very thorough! Good luck, and make sure you talk to your doctor about all your concerns.

Well if your doctor didnt call you ASAP then it is nothing to worry about. In regards to the pain in the sides.. that could be pulled abdominal muscles. It happens in subsequent pregnancies and never really goes away.
Now to the fact that she was checking everywhere on you stomach..yes it is precedure. They are measuring how much amniotic fluid you are carrying in relation to the baby's size, placement of the placenta, and measuring all the long bones in the baby to determine approx fetal age. Try not to stress too much about it cuz stress is bad for the baby. Just relax and see your doctor. My thoughts are with you.

As far as I remember, yes this probing all over and on the sides is pretty common. I am expecting baby # 8. But if you are ever unsire, you shouldnt hesitate to ask your doctor. Dont be embarrassed, just ask, even silliest of questions could turn out to be concerns, but yeah just ask your DR.
