It looks to have 3 sides to the needles, and the tip is pointed. I'm leaning towards Jack Pine judging from the answers.... btw the sample is from Eastern Newfoundland.

There is White Spruce in Newfoundland, I'm thinking it could be that then. lol

I believe that you have a Fraiser Fir. It appears to have flat needles of the same type. Here is a link that might help!

I am not positive it is easier to identify on the tree but I am sure that it is not a jack pine. I am leaning towards a fir or spruce. Possibly a Norway.

It appears to be a red spruce...

P.S. It's most certainly NOT a jack pine! LOL Jack pine looks like this...

P.S.S. Norway spruce have white bark at the tips...The example you gave us had dark bark under the needles and at the foliage tips, indicating a red spruce or similar tree.

Some kind of Spruce. It'll be helpful if you had a pic with a cone. I would vote for White Spruce.

It is a fir tree. This looks like the pic you have in terms of what the tree looks like http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.suresoft.ca/Gallery_5/fir_cones_page.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.suresoft.ca/Gallery_5/fir_cones.html&h=421&w=560&sz=95&hl=en&start=67&tbnid=LTckuovQ8oNz3M:&tbnh=100&tbnw=133&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dfir%2B%2Btree%26start%3D60%26ndsp%3D20%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26sa%3DN
