This is a debatable question, but I would tend to think Jesus Christ, he influenced all of Western Civilization for the past 2000 years, and continues to influence today, his name is certainly known throughout the world. Others might include, Mohammed, Abraham, and Adam.

There cannot be the most famous man, to be referred to in the superlative degree. Every age, throws up its own heroes. But, human memory is so fickle that such heroes are easily forgotten. Jesus was not a hero in his own life time. Even to-day, there is a large section of the mankind, that does not subscribe to him. Gandhi, about whom the scientist Einstein praised in such glowing terms, " in the generations to come, men will scare believe that such a man lived on this earth", was broken hearted, when his own party men did not heed his advice to give up accepting power and to allow to the Muslim league to form the unified India and who eventually died in the hands of an assassin representing an organisation which strongly disapproved of his pacifistic policy towards the Muslim question.
