Ok seriously I think I have a real problem here. I didn't used to have an opinion about football at all. In fact I tried watching the superbowl a couple of times and enjoyed it at parties. But ever since I started dating my boyfriend it's like I'm suddenly allergic to it! As for the USC part, I actually wanted to go to the school but my parents were d1cks and didn't want to let me go to LA (or anywhere else that wasn't the city I grew up in) for school. So I also had no ill feelings towards USC. Until I met my boyfriend. He attended the school and is a HUGE football fan. I am super resentful about it. Almost jealous? I don't know. I really have a negative reaction when football season starts or I see anything USC affiliated. It makes me anxious. I don't mean to sound lame - although it is rather a lame problem. But I really want some insight here. If you want to reply with a put down or stupid joke I guess there is nothing I can do about that but I'm hoping someone can really help!

Thanks for all your great answers! I think Sarah and Scott J have interesting points. It could be that I'm really mad at my parents or resentful that the boyfriend is soooo into the game. But I think my feelings about it are abnormal! I really feel deeply upset whenever I see it or hear about it. I don't say much about it except for maybe a wise-crack or two but I never really let on just HOW much it affects me. sigh. I have tried to participate and really understand why people like it and I can see why they do. I don't understand why I don't. Seriously, logically what could be more fun that hanging with your friends on a sunny day in a stadium eating hotdogs, drinking beer watching a game? But I don't like it! I feel sulky inside. I've tried everything I can think of. I rooted for Notre Dame one game I rooted for USC in another. I just want to puke really. And I feel bad because he loves it so much and I want to be a part of what he loves but it seriously just makes me mad and anxious

In response to Loveholio. I would never ever dream of taking football away from my boyfriend or making him feel bad for liking it! I definitely let him enjoy it and do his thing. My issue is my feelings about it. I just don't think something so small that apparently thousands of people enjoy should get me so riled up inside. I mean I don't particularly care for needlepoint but it doesn't stir up a storm of emotions when I think about it or when I see someone enjoying it. But just because I feel that way doesn't mean that he has to stop what he's doing. I can definitely distinguish a separation there! =)

Honestly sweetie, I think your problem stems from the resentment you feel towards your parents not allowing you to attend USC. When you met your boyfriend and found out that HE had attended, I think that all those emotions you held inside of you came out.

Now when you see anything USC-related or anything to do with football in general, you are again reminded that your parents barred you from something you wanted.

I'm not sure how you can remedy this other than maybe trying to come to grips with why your parents didn't allow you to go to school there. Other than that, maybe you should sit down with them and express the anger that you obviously still feel towards them. Maybe that will be able to bring some kind of closure.

Sorry about your situation. Hope it improves!

wow, sounds like you have some serious issues.

i was never a football fan until i went to USC. in fact, i didn't start going to the games until my 2nd year. since then, i've been to every home game and a few away games. the energy at USC is incredible (especially if you are affiliated in any way). your bf is probably enjoying that energy. and if you went to USC, you may be the same way too!

try to let it go. i'm sure other schools are similar. (michigan, notre dame, ohio state, etc)

as for football in general...college games are usually on satrudays only. let him have his one day and he'll give you the other 6. not bad...

and the season only lasts for 4 months. i'm sure he'll give you the other 8.

FIGHT ON!

ALOT OF GUYS, LIKE MYSELF, GO INTO "FOOTBALL MODE" ONCE FOOTBALL STARTS. IT'S ALMOST LIKE A RELIGION. I CAN'T QUITE EXPLAIN IT, BUT IT HAS BEEN A HUGE POINT OF FRICTION WHEN EVER FOOTBALL STARTED AND I WAS IN A RELATIONSHIP. DON'T TAKE THIS THE WRONG WAY, BUT I THINK YOUR PROBLEM IS THAT YOUR BOYFRIEND'S ATTENTION IS DIVERTED AWAY FROM YOU DURING FOOTBALL SEASON. DOES THAT MEAN YOU MEAN LESS TO HIM THAN FOOTBALL? NO. HE JUST REALLY LOVES THE GAME. TRY PULLING FOR A PAC-10 RIVAL OF USC'S AND CREATE A FRIENDLY RIVALRY BETWEEN THE TWO OF YOU. THEN MAYBE YOU WOULD BE MORE INTERESTED IN FOOTBALL.
