I think it might have to do with helping them get their thoughts together, but still make it look like they're typing something of importance... I don't know. That was poorly worded. Maybe I'm a bad person to answer this one. I've gone through the whole teenage thing but never really started my sentences that way.

Because the literacy of America's children has declined to such a point that they no longer know how to express themselves without the use of "ummmm" and "yeah" and "OK, well here's the story" and "uh' and all the rest. The American school system is AWFUL and we lag behind other countries in turning out intelligent, well rounded kids. If you don't believe that, take a look at statistics. They are alarming! Also, if we correct the little darlings they go wild and hit us with a barrage of profanities (that, they seem to know) and the educators tell us we are thwarting them. Ditto for the parents of these illiterate ninnies, many of whom are illiterate themselves.

Ummmm, yeah- I guess it's like one of those generational things, like, you know? Years ago it was 'you know' you know? Then it was like every other word was like like. I mean like really you know?

Articulation has become a lost art. So has spelling correctly even when spell check is available.

cuz they do not know what they are talking about or because they disagree but do not want to tell u.....i guess its a way to not talk but at the same time sayign a lot
