I used my mom's Singer Stylist 834, it sat on a shelf for about 10 years untouched, now the bobbin gear broke into two pieces. I called a local shop, they said it is about a $75 charge. Being that this is the first of the gears to break, am I better off buying a new unit, or is it something that they built them better "back in the day"?

It is really a simple decision - Replace it. The cost of repairs will add up to more than the cost of a new machine.

Do you like this machine? Whether or not it's worth fixing is up to whether or not you like using this machine. The new gears should last about 30 years, so it's not like you're going to have to keep replacing them. You can't buy a decent sewing machine for $75, and I would avoid buying anything at Walmart or Target, you need to be able to "test drive" any new sewing machine.

Can u call the Singer Sewing place and ask how much it would be for a new one. Maybe u could sell it to them and buy a new one or trade. Most Singer places fix older models and sell them reasonable. If u want a brand new one Wal-Mart, Target also sell them. If u have no Singer where u live, call information for business and they will locate the nearest one to u.

Buy the gears and watch a video (You-Tube) to learn how to do it yourself. Those gears are $15 for the set.
