I've heard of all the animals they sent into space, how many came back and what happened to them after?

for me, Astronomers would like to expirement or discover something in space.. and going to space would take years, and for them not to waste time and life (because we don't know what will happen during the "trip")... that's why they are sending the animals instead, and along with these animals are very hightechnology devices like camera and radio, so that whatever information they can get can be record it..

I think it was cruel and heartless to put animals into space knowing they were bound to die. It is more of a borderline moral decision if they were going to bring them back and they had a chance of surviving,
