I'm a healthy, sane person; however, I think I could, if I did not force myself to talk to people and smile, simply do whatever and no one notice me at all. I've seen it happen before, and completely understand the psychos who go up in the tower and shoot people for no good reason. They feel invisible too. What does this say about me that I can understand this mentality, even though I know better than to ever do such a thing and never would consider it?

It doesn't say anything bad about you that you can understand that mentality.

"Nothing human is alien to me." I forget who first and most famously said that, but it's one of my favorite quotes.

Your post and the first answer put me in mind of two Buffy the Vampire Slayer episodes. (It's a phenomenally GREAT show, BTW. If you've never seen it, I highly recommend it.)

In one, a girl who felt invisible actually became invisible. The guy who created the show says that the idea came to him when he was in high school (and feeling invisible -- what if this phenomenon made you literally disappear?)

I'm also put in mind of Buffy's speech to Jonathan (who, it turns out went to the tower to off himself, not others). "You're right. No one notices you. They're all caught up in their own pain. Every one of them. The popular ones, the cheerleaders, even the boys who torment you."

I've long thought that people take the saying "The squeaky wheel gets the grease." backwards. They mean it to imply that, therefore, you should "squeak" -- which, to my mind, would just make a world full of people screaming "ME! ME! ME!" which is the LAST thing we need.

I wish people would take from that saying, therefore, counteract this, and notice the non-squeakers; they deserve more credit than they get.

sounds like you are depressed. have you considered a diet or lifestyle change? volunteer at a community center or school to give you a more connected feeling. exercise helps too. vitamins such as a B complex can help. I've been where you are, the hardest thing is to reach out and you have done that here. so take another step and help yourself by helping others. Good Luck.

People are, generally, very self-absorbed in their own lives, thoughts, and needs. It typically has nothing to do with the person they're "ignoring"...they don't even realize they're doing it.

The "sane" person realizes that it's not directed at them, and counteracts the tendency to be "ignored" by making the effort to be noticed...as you've done. Or they learn to not care, and in some cases prefer, to not be on peoples' radar.

The "psycho" who goes up in a tower, or whatever, needs attention, and validation. Regretfully, the method they chose for getting it is not socially acceptable.

your fine! Anyone could do such a thing if pushed to far. If you are faking the smile and are seriously hurting inside try talking about it with someone you trust. Even meditation and self affirmation does work if except that it can!

Understanding the notion of being invisible is fine, even normal. Once you don't act on it you are fine.
