It's probably just bruising on around the cut. Put a little antibacterial cream on it (maybe when he's napping so he doesn't try to touch it and then taste it). Do you have one of those mats in the tub that keeps you from slipping? If not it would be a good thing to invest in...help eliminate more slips.

I would have taken him to the emergency room last night. Regardless of insurance coverage.

If you can move the skin, he may require either stitches, or at least a butterfly. By leaving it open overnight, you gave him more risk of an infection.

Call your pediatrician, if doc can't see him immediately, then go to the emergency room. It will still need to be cleaned out and looked at.

In the future - general rule of thumb is if the skin can be moved, if it looks like it can take at least one stitch - then take them in to the ER. Any change of color of the wound should also be looked at. For children, all head injuries should be checked out. A chin injury is also considered a head injury. It's always best to leave the ER after a doc says "just soap & water & a bandaid is good" - then enter an ER where they ask you what took you so long to bring him in.

If I were you I would have been in the ER last night! You're not a Dr....you don't know if it's ok or not. To me it sounds like a pretty nasty cut! He will probably need a few stitches. I got a cut on my finger about that long and it took 4 stitches to close it. Especially since he's a child and is not as careful as an adult would be....besides that if you don't get medical attention the scarring would be worse than if he got stitches. Also since the shower door track is metal, he may need a tetnus shot.

Please call the dr's office...whichever pediatrician is on call should be able to let you know whether or not you need to take him in. Or take him to an urgent care or to the hospital. It's better to be safe than sorry....it's his life...don't be irresponsible with it!

When my daughter was about 2 years old, my dad was bouncing her on his knees, and she slipped and fell, and hit her chin on the wood floor. It split her chin open, and it bled profusely, but my mom is a nurse, and she tended to it with a butterfly bandage and antibiotic ointment. My mom thought for sure my daughter would need stitches, but she didn't. It bruised, just as any injury would bruise, and she now has a scar in exactly the same place that I have one on my chin. Crazy, eh? Anyway...if the cut has stopped bleeding, and it's scabbed over, make sure you put a little bit of antibiotic ointment, such as Neosporin, on it. He should be okay!

Sometimes the cut will turn dark like that due to the old blood. Did you clean it with an antiseptic after it happened? I would wash it with soap and water and put something like Neosporin on it. as long as it's not seeping puss or he doesn't run a temp I would think he's fine. Kids heal quickly just make sure you keep it clean.

if it is not looking like a normal healing cut take him in. You don't want to run the risk of infection. Also try to see if their is another doctor at your doctor's office that will take him in.

With my son's office their are four doctor's and if one is out another one will see him.

I don't think dark and blackish is normal I believe it is supposed to look pink. Call the clinic and ask maybe they can help.

It is most likely starting to bruise. It is too late to get stitches if they were needed. Drs. like to stitch in the first 2 hrs. if at all possible. You should be able to call your ped. and have him return your call. If your dr. does not do this, You should find another dr. That is their job, to always be available to their patients, if they can't be, they should have another dr. on call that can answer any ?? or advise you on what you should do. ANY time you feel your child needs to see a Dr. follow your gut and take him in.! Any kind of trauma to the head bleeds alot and will get nasty bruises. did he bite his tongue? Best of luck to you and your little guy.

You should take him to a doctor.

Although the dark color could just be bruising, the cut might need stitching to avoid a scar. And shower door tracks are usually dirty, so he might need antibiotic.

Good Luck

I'd just put some hydrogen peroxide or neosporin on it & let it heal on it's own. Most likely he'll have a little scar. But as long as it's not still gushing blood or look infected, he should be fine.
