is it still true that treason is the only offence to carry death penalty in UK

Even that doesn't, but the issues can be subtle. Read and weep: http://conventions.coe.int/Treaty/EN/Treaties/Html/114.htm

"Protocol No. 6 to the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms concerning the abolition of the death penalty"

Even if there were such a penalty on the books, the Human Rights Act 1998 would invoke the above to nullify it. EXCEPT that Britain has not ratified Protocol No. 11, so that, theoretically, in time of war (and we don't mean one of those phony wars, like "War on Democracy" that Bush has waged), they could do it.

But then European Union law would be invoked, and that would invoke (I'm guessing) Protocol No. 11. The degree to which the ECHR is part and parcel of EU law is uncertain. But growing.

Yes. But there is no death penalty in the UK

Extract- Cut and paste
The death penalty for murder was abolished nearly 40 years ago by the Murder (Abolition of Death Penalty) Act 1965, and replaced with a mandatory life sentence. The passing of the Act followed a great deal of debate both inside and outside Parliament over the death penalty.

The death penalty was retained for the capital offences of treason and piracy with violence, however it was abolished in 1998 under the Crime and Disorder Act.

In 1999 the home secretary signed the sixth protocol of the European Convention of Human Rights which formally abolished the death penalty in the UK and ensured it could not be brought back.

Yes that is true. I doubt that they would use that right if there ever was a reason for this (human rights). But your right, treason is the only offence that carries the death penalty in th UK.

No. You only get the death penalty if you say anything vaguely offensive about Islam.
