My belly button piercing got infected quite a bit after I first had it done, but I was in the military and the uniform kept irritating it. The place where you had your piercing done should have given you some antimicrobial soap to use for cleaning the piercing site. I can't remember the name of it, but it really helped. You should leave the bellybutton ring in for another month or so before you change it again. Don't take it out when you wash it, just get the antimicrobial soap on it, and slide your bar or ring up and down to get the soap lather inside the piercing hole. This will help clean it better. Make sure you rinse it well too.

Most likely the scabbing was irritated. If there is no swelling and no pus coming from the piercing area, I would not worry too much about it. Get some hydrogen peroxide and continually rinse the wound for 10 minutes or so. Assure that your piercing is not made of silver, though, or you could risk ruining the metal. Rinse off the hydrogen peroxide with cool water and keep dry. Some triple antibiotic or petroleum jelly coating it under a dry bandage will help it heal for a few days. If there is infection, however, see your piercer or consult a doctor. Sometimes the wounds take a little while to heal, especially ones on the belly button, so good luck.

Oh, and don't swim or give blood for a long while.

Consider that it might have seemed healed but wasn't and switching the bar might have torn or irritated any healing it was doing. Just leave it alone for while, let it do it's thing and dont put any creams and stuff on it. It will heal on its own, creams and stuff wont work. Look at my source for any further information......it is interesting!

And now, a few “don’ts”

Don’t ever put hydrogen peroxide or alcohol on a piercing – they are too drying and will delay healing.
Don’t ever use Neosporin on a piercing – it can actually trap bacteria. Read the label; it actually says, “Not for puncture wounds.” Guess what? A piercing is a puncture wound.
Don’t ever remove your piercing jewelry before the piercing is completely healed, which may take months or up to a year. If you suspect a piercing infection, see your piercing professional or doctor first.
Don’t sleep on your piercing until the initial healing phase is over.
Don’t wear tight clothing over your piercing during the initial healing phase.
