Zen, Scherzer & Company was founded in Rehau, Bavaria Germany in 1899. They originally manufactured dinnerware in the popular "Limoges" style. A pattern consisting of bands of little pink flowers was one of their most popular and is commonly encountered in antique stores. The factory itself only used transferring and lithographic methods of decoration for its dinnerware, however in the early 20th century they did offer blanks for "china painting" (A popular pastime of the wealthy at the time). During the 1960s, house painters (hausmalers) used Zen, Scherzer blanks for decorating. Usually the house painters covered the company's hallmark on the back, with gilding and painted their own mark and/or initials.
Zen Scherzer was still creating dinnerware in the late 1980s. The last I heard was that in 1994 they were making restaurant dinnerware and a few collectible cups and saucers. I am unaware if the company is still in business.
I hope this helps!
