It has to be Star Wars. It defined a genre, and changed the ways that films are financed, formatted, casted, and written.
Became the catalyst for change from studio power to artist/audience power.
Oh yeah...it was definitely a cool flick!

It depends on what you think is Sci-Fi.
Some put anything that isn't "reality" in that category. Others
put only "space" movies in that genre. Hmmmm... best?
There could only be a top 100 or maybe 200, but certainly not a best! There are too many for any one person to choose.
Let me put it this way...
When you ask, "What's your favorite..." What it seems like you are really saying is "What movie would you take with you to an island if you had only one choice?" Because that would be THE
best... Quick! Choose!
So here is the Internet Movie Database's answer to that question
http://www.imdb.com/chart/scifi
Do I agree? Nope. Do you? Probably not. But I am sure you will find some that will be on your top ten list too.
Some of my favs (certainly not all):
Before I start the list, here is the **ultimate applause movie** I ever attended. I heard cheering and thunderous applause at the theater all four times I went. This movie made me proud of our country and our movie makers - they brought our hope back...
It was Spiderman - it changed the way we felt after 9/11 - we got our PRIDE and GUTS back after watching this one. "you mess with one of us, you mess with ALL of us!"
Here are some more, certainly NOT in preference order - just
all good movies.
1. Star Wars (all)
2. Back to the Future (all - although the second one was a bit lame)
3. Star Trek (you can't be a TRUE sci-fi fan without this one *wink*)
4. Men In Black - It had us laughing for once... about time!
5. Galaxy Quest - Tim the Toolman Taylor never looked SO good! AND it was funny.
6.The Matrix - except for the VERY lame ending of the last one
7. 2001- A Space Odessey - Did you even read the book? WOW.
8. The Incredibles - again, we get to laugh!
9. Blade Runner - I saw a clean version on the Disney Channel
once and liked it EVEN BETTER than the full cut version.
10. Planet of the Apes - the first time I saw it was a shock, but after that it was just fun
11. E.T - 'nuff said
12. Terminator 2 - yes the first one was ok, but 2 blew it away and the acting was pretty darn good too.
13. Soylent Green
14. X-Men
15. Contact
16. The Time Machine - if you haven't seen it - DO
17. Batman (most)
18. Superman (all - you gotta just watch - we miss him)
19. Batman Begins - very different take on Batman
20. Fantastic Voyage
21. The Andromeda Strain - it's just darn good
22. Silent Running - sad but telling - don't watch this when you are depressed
23. Close Encounters of the Third Kind - very long
24. Dracula - yep the Bela Lagosi classic
There are so many more... but if you find these and put them in your Netflix queue you'd be entertained for a few weeks. You might even watch some of them twice :)

I would say the Star Wars Trilogy , especially The Empire Strikes Back, would be considered by most to be the most popular Sci-Fi movie. Also 2001: A Space Odyssey, for its technical accuracy, and I really liked the movie DUNE which I considered a great Sci-Fi movie although it did poorly at the box office. I could go on and on…this is one of those questions which probably will have no perfect answer.

Star Wars. I prefer The Empire Strikes Back, but I think the fan following alone (aside from the money made) makes the original trilogy the hands-down greatest Sci Fi ever.

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die. "
That quote is from "Blade Runner" a 1.982 movie with Harrison Ford, Edward James Olmos, Rutger Hauer and Daryl Hannah that I consider to be the best sci fi movie of all time. No impeccable white space suits but an amazing view at LA one hundred years from now.

Forbidden Planet - This set the genre in the right direction. It wasn't campy during a time when most sci-fi was campy.
