Tempo is speed. For example, when I play a song with a tempo of 84, I can hit 84 notes (value: 1/4) within a minute.
I associate rhythm with a particular sound of a beat within a song. For example: da dum da dum ... (4/4 - jazz - like) ... or what about a waltz: daa dum dum daa dum dum (3/4).

Tempo is the speed at which a piece of music goes, and rhythm is the pattern or sound that you hear. For example, tempo is 118 bpm (beats per minute), and "eighth-note, eighth-note, sixteenth-notes," is a rhythm pattern.
