I believe the impassioned description of the battle, undertaken by Victor Hugo in Les Miserables, where he accounts for Marius Pontmercy's father's doings in said battle, as well as the description of the small details that inclined the balance towards Wellington's side rather than Napoleon's (i.e. the timely appearance of Blücher's reinforcements, whereas Ney's untimely hiring of a dumb "guide" that made Napoleon's reinforcements get lost when they were needed).

The book is a compilation of great leaders & their famous battles & is called "Great Commanders & their Battles" - can't remember the author & publisher though.

It was detailed & even has an illustration of the contours of the battlefield as well as the manoueveurs executed by the opposing armies.

"An Infamous Army" by Georgette Heyer. (With fictional romance.)

From Jane Aiken Hodge:

"Georgette Heyer's description of the climactic battle [of Waterloo] has been used at Sandhurst and acclaimed as the best there is, and her son [Richard Rougier QC] remembers the only public lecture she ever gave. She took him, as a schoolboy, to the United Services Institute, where they found a model of the battle, and she began to describe it to him, too absorbed to notice the arrival of a bevy of schoolgirls, whose attendant mistress recognized the expert and told them to hush and listen to her."

"She covered every one of the many contemporary sources of the Battle of Waterloo..."

The one in William Thackeray's "Vanity Fair". It doesn't exactly fall within the category of military history, but it is full of feeling.
