2000 Trans Am, the paperwork says that "D" is used for normal driving, and that "3" can be used for more power, but less fuel economy, such as uphill. Can this only be used for going up hills and such, or can it be used to increase straight line acceleration or drags.

Also, does anybody know what the 0-60 or any other acceleration times are for the automatic transmission? all the ones i've seen are for the 6 speed.

Yea D does stand for normal driving and such. 3 is used for uphill to gain more torque to go uphill. In vehicles with manual transmission it's the same thing as them putting it in a lower gear...that's the same thing in an automatic when you go from "D,3,2,1" You can use 3 if your allready driving 50, and it will give you a lower gear which will respond with more power and optimum performance for your car, if you race. If your coming off a start at a light or wherever...you can go from 1,2,3, then "D". I know this because i have a 2002 pontiac firehawk and it's automatic. Dont be under estimated of an auto car...just get gears and youll be fine!!! Most dragsters these days are using auto trans anyway, cuz it's better. As for the quarter mile time, my friend has a 99 trans am which is auto trans also with 325, and stock he ran a 13.7 in the quarter. In 0-60 times that's roughly 5.4 when it was dynoed. Hope this helps and good luck. And remember its the driver not the car....

5.3 sec 0-60 on a 305 hp 5.7ltr engine - and as for the D and 3 - D is basically 4th gear and its an overdrive. So if you do want more power you would drop it down to 3rd which will down shift the car and give you more acceleration. I do not recommend leaving it in 3rd gear going 70 or 80 or whatever since your rpms will be high and that's not good for your engine or your transmission for that matter

Putting the car in 3 will not help straight line acceleration. The main reasons to use 3 instead of D are to prevent 'hunting' for the correct gear (an annoyance to many) and to provide compression braking going downhill. Also if you trailer or plow snow (I'd like to see that in a T/A!), you'd want to be in 3.

Basically D is primarily used for highway driving & 3 is used for around town. In D the overdrive or 4th gear kicks in @ 45mph.

Putting the tranny in the 3 would only keep it from shifting into overdrive so you would keep the power from the lower gears
