Will all these xenophobes stop saying the royal family is German? Their family has lived here for three hundred years- can you trace your family tree back that far? Or are you saying anyone whose ancestors moved here since then is not really British?
As to the question, our hereditary Queen may be head of state but she is not one of our 'leaders'. The country is governed by a cabinet made up of elected MPs. I think Britain is actually better-off than America when it comes to being able to change governments. The turnover of members of Congress is one of the lowest in western democracies because of gerrymandering; once in, they're stuck like barnacles and there are fewer competitive seats than in Britain. Remember, the Democrats controlled Congress for about 40 years until 1995. No British party has ever been in power for that long. 1997 saw a huge swing from the Tories to Labour which would be very difficult to achieve in America.
That said, a huge number of people here loathe Tony Blair for helping start the war in Iraq, but he still won the last election because his 2001 majority was so big it was hard to throw his party out. As for the Queen, so long as she doesn't abuse her inherited position to make mischief - and she hasn't - many people like the continuity of the same figurehead they have known all their lives. She is above partisan politics and has long experience to share with her prime ministers. It is unlikely her son (definitely) or grandson (probably) will command the same respect.

Well, Manx, that's not quite correct. Philip is Greek but all members of royalty in Europe are pretty much the same bunch. The monarchy is an anachronism but at this current time have no real power as such. The last use of the "Royal Prerogative" was by Queen Victoria on Homosexuality laws during the nineteenth century where she refused to believe "women did that" therefore leading to a strange situation where homosexuality was only illegal for men. It is still the case under English law that "Rape" of a man is not technically illegal.
Republicanism is growing in the UK but the fact is that the monarchy is still a huge landowner that pays little or no taxes and while it could be argued they contribute to the economy in that they bring tourism, nobody actually comes to see the queen but the trappings of royalty. Henry VIII has been dead 4.5 centuries but nobody has stopped visiting Hampton Court Palace. However, if the alternative were a president like Bush, I'll take HRH.

only provide up on Heskey and initiate up with Defoe. Get Joe Cole in on the left. do not make thoroughly pointless subsitutions like Lennon for Wright-Phillips, what became that one and all approximately? And once you are going to sub Crouch in, do it earlier eighty minutes so he easily has of project. What they easily need to do is start up fiddling with hobby and initiate up taking some delight in the badge on their blouse. it is like they don't even care approximately England or the followers, and then get pissed off whilst they get booed. positioned some bloody balls into it and end enjoying so passively. We do have the expertise to get by way of, the question is despite if we've the teamwork.

I dont believe wealth, privilage and power should be earned not given to you because you were born into a particular family. I've heard many Americans say theyprefer the queen to George Bush but as you have stated yourself George bush does have the virtue that he will be gone soon. I dont understand why Americans love our Royals so much particularly when their ancestors fought a war to rid themselves of british monarchical rule and still celebrate their victory on July 4th. If you do want her though you are very welcome.

I agree with manx480 but also they are only figureheads and largely irrelevant. We can, of course vote out our political leaders and we have an electoral system that is reasonably free of corruption unlike you. If there were as many electoral irregularities and fraud in anywhere else as there is in USA, then you would probably have invaded them.
Just to clear up a confusion, the Royal Family are not Scottish, not since William of Orange, they are Dutch of German extraction except Phillip, as has been already noted, who is Greek.

we DO vote our leaders in and out! we live in a democracy and the monarchy reign but they do not rule. we all feel fine about this as the queen and her family are excellent value for money and work hard for the UK. we're all satisfied that they earn the money we pay them. however, we do worry constantly about people who ask stupid questions, fail to understand the simplest of concepts yet are able to vote in the leaders of their nuclear-weapon equipped country. now that is something we're stuck with and makes us feel scared.

The Queen and her crew are now just expensive hangers on...how we get rid of them I don't know ...we certainly don't seem to get value for money with them...The young princes ,William is OK ( looks like a cast off Kennedy) the ginger one Harry we should pay less...nature hasn't been kind to that boy hes pig ugly..and brings royalty into disrepute..they don't do much for their money so shouldn't makes us ashamed of them...Fergie and Andrews daughters are stunners....not surprising as both their parents are good looking...

England have Scottish leaders - it is pathetic. The English who put themselves forward for the job are upper class snobs who nobody would want to trust. They are, quite frankly, totally disgusting.
