I would say yes to puchasing your own space. Use it as a medium on getting your talents published as a web designer...

First learn to create great websites. That means a bunch of things like HTML, php, sql, java, .NET, Ajax, etc. (I'm sure I left a few out) And a lot of software - just about anything graphics related. You also need to understand how to register domains and move them. You need at least a basic idea of server setup because you will have to deal with the hosting companies.

Get yourself a really great personal wesite that shows your talents, style etc. If you can get involved with any projects that you can show for your portfolio, that is a big help. You might do free work for a charity or even start a side web site that draws hits.

Now after that, which is a few years of groundwork, you need to try to sell this to the clients you want to get. There is a lot of business out there, but there are a lot of free-lancers so you do need to know what you are talking about. You will be expected to know how to set up everything. Clients will most hire you for tough sites, the easy ones they can probably figure out themselves.

As your list of clients grows, you will have more to show other clients and it gets easier.

Well my dad started a web-site business when I was in highschool (about 7 years ago). I know that he targets local businesses. More like mom and pop places that don't have sites. He did cold calling, door to door sales, as well as just spreading the word with flyers and business cards. Be sure to have a portfolio ready to show interested clients. I have to be honest though, my dad has moved to being a marketing company using all avenues of marketing, not just the web. He had to do this because most people can do their own site for virtually nothing. There is so much software out there to do it on your own, most people don't want to pay to have someone else do it. I don't want to burst your bubble! I wish you the best, it is a fun job. :)

I know you can find a way cheaper than this:

~ buy your name @ godaddy.com

~ get a service provider like: http://geocities.com

e.g. http://darwin916.com
