Divergent thinking between two persons means that they have a difference of opinion about the same subject.

A thought , any thought for that matter does not stop , when it arises. If you think of crocodiles , for example, you will think of Animal Kingdom TV channel, then on to Steve Irwin of australia who is associated with crocs.
But , more often than not , the thought takes many different directions . Like the spreading of ripples in a pond. Spreading out . Diverging.
In the case of crocodiles you think of Steve Irwin`s unnatural death in a freak accident. you think of his family. Then Australia . Then envoronment ..... so on. This series of spreading thoughts amounts to divergent thinking.
This useage is more relevant to other issues like economics, Politics, religion and such others
