Take acting classes...you'll probably realize you're not as great as you think...but if you're serious about it...you will become as good as you think...
It's funny how acting is that art that everyone thinks they can do...and it's not really the case...You have to really work at it...especially if you're into theatre--particularly musical theatre.

This question is asked at least 10 times a day. You begin in SCHOOL PLAYS (trying out for plays and every facet including set painting, lights, etc.)and DRAMA CLUB. Then you go into COMMUNITY THEATER and spend a lot of time there. You also get into ACTING WORKSHOPS and learn more about your craft. Then, you worry about all the rest after that. And the director and audience decides if YOU have SERIOUS talent. You will soon realize if it is serious or not.

If you are still in school, head to the drama club and sign up. Audition for the next school play. Look for a community theatre group that is doing a show you like and get involved. Good places to get experience and to learn acting and theater for free. Also put your hand to things behind the stage. Customes, makeup, set, lighting, sound. The more you know about how theater is done, the better you can do it on stage. Find a good director and attach yourself to her/him. It is fun and gets you experience for the resume at the same time.
Plus often the community theater groups are amoung the first to hear about "real" acting positions. Producers and directors are looking for people who know how to act and take directions, so they go to the acting groups first. So far this year the theater I am with has supplied cast members for three movies. And I am not in one of the "movie making Meccas".
I have watched more than one member of my acting company go on to bigger and better things in stage, tv and movies. This year: Have a young man who has now produced latex masking for a couple of well known sci fi movies. A young man who appeared with Kevin Cosner. And a young lady who left just a month ago to join the touring company of Phantom of the Opera.

Unfortunately, an agent, casting director, or manager, must decide if you have "serious" talent.

There are acting schools everywhere and community theatre. Get involved - if you want to act, find a venue and ACT!
