They WERE about evenly split. Things may be changing though, Democrats's numbers are growing while Republicans' shrink.

I would say the Democrat Party because they have been around much longer than the Republican Party. The Democratic Party was founded during the 1820's and the first Democratic President was Andrew Jackson while the Republican Party was founded in 1854 and the first Republican President was Abraham Lincoln.

They are about equally split on numbers of members.
The democrats have a lot more personal wealth though, because most of the uneducated but very wealthy hollywood set are democrats, and thats a lot more money than the middle class (who happen to be almost entirely republican) make.
