The older you get, the more you'll realize how important history is. I use to feel the same about History and Geography, but they're priceless courses.

Kourtnie-
There's more to history than meets the eye. History tells us where we have been. It tells of the important events in our culture. It tells of important (and not so important) people who have changed our lives because of their actions, passions or just plain living.
You use history every day and just don't know it. Every time you walk in the halls of your school you see history. What grade were you in last year? Isn't that history? How are the teams doing in your school? Do you have any sectional, regional or state champs ? That's history. Do you have homecoming games at your school? The alumni come back for those games and catch up with old friends. That's history.
Do you watch the news? Did you see the safe landing of the Space Shuttle last week? The Shuttle landed safely because the scientists learned from the Columbia explosion what NOT to do. That's history.
You're bored? Why not go to your local public library and read about pioneer women? They worked very hard to preserve their families and farms.
There is display in the park across from the library in which I work. This is the mobile Vietnam War Memorial. It that doesn't tell history, I don't know what does. This memorial preserves the names of the men and women who died from 1946-1975 in the Vietnam War. Their service and sacrifice mean a lot to many people (maybe not you). That's history.
So, I'm off my soapbox now.

History classes are boring. History itself can be fun. Take this little history lesson....
Hey, diddle, diddle
The cat and the fiddle
The cow jumped over the moon
The little dog laughed to see such sport
And the Dish ran away with the Spoon.
Real event. This little rhyme refers to Queen Elizabeth I who played her court like a cat played a mouse. The entertainments of the court were lavish (the cow jumped over the moon). The little dog was Sir Roger Dudley who Queen Elizabeth called her little lap dog. And the REAL EVENT that sparked the rhyme.... The DISH (the lord who took care of the royal dishes) secretly married the SPOON (the Queen's taster). When her pregnancy started showing, the Queen found out and locked them both in the Tower of London for 7 years.
Scandalous, huh? Overblown reaction, right? No marriage should be punished that way, right? But the Spoon was second in the line of succession and her children could sit the throne. The marriage of Lady Mary Grey was treasonous. It was worse than if Prince Harry had secretly married a stripper because at that time the English throne had far more power.
Unfortunately, they don't teach the good history in class. They don't have time for it. The scandals, the everyday life, and the impact of events are far more interesting.
By the way, Peter the Pumpkin Eater murdered his wife and buried her in his pumpkin patch. Thought you ought to know.

Kourtnie, my guess is the reason you are bored by history is that nobody has taught you the real history of the United States or world. Most history textbooks today are crap and you wind up knowing less than before you read the book.
Read "Peoples History of the United States" by Howard Zinn.
If you think history is boring after that book, I would be amazed.
Also "Lies My Teacher Told Me" by James Loewen. All the things they never told you about in history class - like Columbus chopping off the hands of indians.

Hi Kourtnie,
Sorry about your boredom.
I'm grateful for my high school history and humanities classes. Now. (They probably bored me then also) My daughter and I participate in Living History recreations for a variety of time periods (Renaissance, Mex Am war, Civil War, and late 19th century)
Re-living or Re-enacting these time periods make me grateful to live today. Refrigeration, modern medicine, running potable water, plumbing in general, and even a woman's right to vote all have greatly changed lives.
There is also something special about going back to basics. It could mean roughing it by camping or crafting. I enjoy working on my spinning wheel and looms.
Look for someone in history of your age. Appreciate their struggles and triumphs. Realize what amazing feats you could perform.
How about the teenager, Sybil Ludington?

Hi! I love learning about history, where our culture came from, etc. I really love learning about Victorian/English history, especially around the time of Henry the 8th. Pretty interesting times. I suggest doing some reading on Mary Queen of Scots and The Virgin Queen-Catherine Tudor. They may spark your interest. Also watch the History channel this weekend. They have some great programs about that era. Also, watch a show on that channel called "Digging For the Truth" with host Josh Bernstein (very cute btw!). Very good show. To see more about it go to http://www.historychannel.com
Enjoy learning about history...make it fun! =)

History is not bound to repeat itself and if it does you can learn from others past mistakes.
