I wouldn't really call Death Valley a "deserted" place, as there are some establishments & developments there. My guess is that it's just a gee-whiz statistic that makes people think about traveling there in the wintertime. It's an awesome national park to visit!

How small of a population would preclude a location from being allowed advertisement as having the highest temp in the USA? Wouldn't that be a bit disrespectful to those who live there or near there? Not to mention meteorologically more incorrect (and do we really need more people spouting out falsehoods and insisting they are correct?)...

Also read up on the siting of weather stations in Death Valley, there are two weather stations there now.

I think what you mean is they give the high temperature of the lower 48...the highest temp recorded for a day anywhere in the lower 48.

Just because it's not as populated as New York doesn't mean it's not hot there.

Good question! Unfortunately, then you run into the problem of deciding just how big of a city would count. What arbitrary population limit would you set?
