"Church:
1. a place of worship.
2. slang term used to describe a house of ill repute or a *certain* bar when speaking in the presence of women.
3. used to express agreement, to replace amen!
4. slang for good bye, similar to peace."
I think Number 4 is what you're looking for. ;)

Damn, it's some real ignorant, unconscious people on Yahoo. But good question. This is taken from the Black Church experience. When a pastor is delivering the sermon, he/she wants to know that the congregation is listening and/or in agreement with what they're saying so he/she will make a statement and then say "church?" as to elicit the response of a "amen", "preach", etc. So in Hip-Hop when we say "church" that's like sayin "ya'll hear me?" "feel me?" "make sense?".
Hip-Hop is a culture started in the early 1970s as an alternative to gang violence in New York - the Bronx to be exact, with the blueprint for the music transplanted here by DJ Kool Herc who was a dee jay originally from the Caribbean [Afrika Bambaata was also highly instrumental in the foundation of the culture]. Instead of fighting and killing, we could 'rap' against each other, we could see who was the better dee jay, we could see who had the freshest tags (graffiti art), see who had the dopest style - that shifted the focus from differences to likenesses because we all liked what we were naturally and freely able to do...it gave us a voice in this world to say what we felt.
Rap music is just one pillar of Hip-Hop...dee jaying-breakdancing (dancing)-graffiti (art)-style/slang are the others. Prior to 1986, you had very little violence in Hip-Hop and most of the music was about partying, material aspirations and social change--it was feel good music. This is during the time when the music was owned and controlled by the Black community. Once the status-quo saw profit opportunity, things gradually changed and now the music that you hear "on the radio" is largely focused on the dumbing-down of our youth, misogyny. senseless violence, sex, drugs and other bullsh*t. Hip-Hop has always been a mirror of society, so as society goes so does the music. WIth all of our technological and educational advances, we are morally worse off than we were in the 1970s. Just look around.
I know you didn't ask for all of this but it's important that you know the Truth because what you see on TV and hear on the airwaves is nothing more than illusion. Hope this helps - peace!
