I'm about to be out of work, but I still have people that I can stay with. Are most homeless people, legally insane, or drug addicted?

No. but I worked in a homeless shelter.

People become homeless for several reasons besides the two you mentioned.

What I saw was about a quarter are chronically mentally ill and had poor medication compliance.

The second quarter have chemical dependence and abuse problems.

The third quarter were living from paycheck to paycheck and lost their job.

The last quarter had to suddenly leave an abusive situation.

Many mental ill people also had chemical dependence and abuse problems as well.

Yes, I have been homeless. I was not drug addicted or legally insane.....just homeless. This was 15 years ago. I did manage to stay on some friend's couch until I was able to get into a Christian sister's house. A place where some christians lived communally. I am now living in a beautiful home.....simple but beautiful. I still thank God regularly for my nice hot shower and comfy bed.

Most homeless are just like you, my friend - down on their luck and not having anyone who really cares. There are homeless individuals who are drug-addicted - that is part of the reason they are homeless. As for the "legally insane" homeless, they are simply people who no longer have the financial means to avail themselves of our country's mental-health care system. And, yes, I AM HOMELESS at the present time.

I have been homeless off and on several times in my life, its not fun,Ive never been accused(seriously) of being insane , and never have used drugs. This isn't the country the older generation think it is, jobs are not easy to come by, nor easy to keep, unless your willing to work like a dog for almost nothing. Its been a long time since I was without a home , but God knows it could happen again.

I was homeless before. I was down on my luck. I wasn't on drugs or crazy. I got fired and didn't have any place to go and no money for motels or anything. I went to a women's shelter and they had me get another job and help me to find a place to live. I now have been on my job for 10 years, got a pretty decent place, and a beautiful child. Some people just have obstacles in their life they just need to overcome.
