She was actually an experiment by Gargamel to capture the other smurfs.
One day, while feeling extremely frustrated and spiteful, Gargamel decided on a new plan to exact revenge on the Smurfs, "a ruthless curse that will make them beg for mercy". Gargamel decided to send them a female Smurf - a Smurfette!
Smurfette was made in the wizard Gargamel's laboratory. She was created by a magical potion. Her list of ingredients include: "Sugar and spice but nothing nice...A dram of crocodile tears...A peck of bird brain...The tip of an adder's tongue...Half a pack of lies, white, of course...The slyness of a cat...The vanity of a peacock...The chatter of a magpie...The guile of a vixen and the disposition of a shrew...And of course the hardest stone for her heart...."
Smurfette is discovered by a single Smurf in the forest, wailing to herself and lamenting her unhappy lot in life. She explains to the Smurf that unless she is rescued, she will surely perish. Smurfette is a brunette with straight, stringy hair, ugly eyelashes, a plain dress and large plain shoes.
Well, evil would certainly be too harsh a term. Trouble would definitely be a more appopriate word. And boy, could she cause trouble. As well, she was a really, really bad singer (so off-key that even Harmony Smurf noticed).
Papa Smurf is the Smurf who turned everything around for Smurfette. After a successful operation of "plastic smurfery", Papa Smurf transformed the ugly (and unhappy) brunette Smurfette into the blond bombshell she is today.
The Smurfs were very pleased with the new and improved Smurfette. The truth was eventually revealed to Papa Smurf and the others that Gargamel created the first incarnation of Smurfette, but her improved disposition and appearance helped the Smurfs accept Smurfette as one of their own.

Orginally there was no females at all. The Smurf are a male only race. Gargamel created smurfette to create havoc amongs the smurfs. He didn't make a very pretty though, so after she became friends with the smurfs papasmurfs made her beautiful.

I've often wondered about this, and I think there has been a Family Guy episode where they make fun of the Smurfs for this fact.
I think the Smurfs pop out of mushrooms or flowers in the show, I'm not sure, I can't quite remember.
You could look at it that way, or you could think that Smurfette is a whore. But then again, she would have had to get plastic surgery or something in order to look so young and still have given birth to every other Smurf but that really old Smurf... I can't even remember his name.

Smurfette was the only female smurf because gargamel (sorry about the spelling) the evil wizard first created her to cause trouble amonst the other smurfs, as they were all trying to get her attention, this plan ultimately failed because smurfette feeling she belonged with the smurfs, then betrayed the wizard saving the day.
when she was first created she had black hair like all the other smurfs, but after defeating Gargamel, her hair turned blonde.

Because the Smurfs were initially all one sex and the villain Gargamel created Smurfette to infiltrate them and trick them into being captured... But she found that she couldn't go through with it and ended up joining the rest of the Smurfs....

To find the answer to that, one must fully comprehend the Smurf culture. You see, the Smurfs are a lot like Praying Mantis', but in reverse. Once the smurfs mate, the male beheads the female. The end result is a dieing culture, thus the reason no new smurf episodes have aired. They were too smart for their own good.

Gargarmel wanted to catch the smurfs as per usual. So he thought of the most poerful weapon as used in the roman times... a woman (or Smufette in this case). He created her so she could seduce the other smurfs cos they're ALL male.
But Papa Smurf could see something fishy with this lady so he made her confess of Gargarmel's evil plot. They were about to kill her but she cried cos she wanted to be good and they felt sorry for her (witness the power of feminine seduction).
So Papa smurf cast a spell on her so she'll never be evil again.

Smurffette was created by enemy of Smurfs. She was brunette and suppose to join smurfs so they could be captured. This plan was foiled by Papa Smurf who changed her and made her blonde and what she is today. Originally there was no female smurf she was introduced into the Smurfs by their enemy! Later there was a baby Smurf (not sure how that happened lol) who was female

she wasn't--in later episodes they got two more, sassette and nanny. smurfettes had to be made from a bucket of clue clay and a spell that only gargamel had, and they were evil when they were first created, so papa smurf had to fix them--thats why they are so rare
