My mom used to always say "don't eat that junk, you'll ruin your dinner." Ruin a kid's dinner by eating candy or other junk food, no way!
One fateful day in adulthood though, I ate a bunch of candy late in the work day and followed it up with more junk. When I went to pick up dinner that night I felt my tummy doing flip flops and admitting to the much older woman behind the counter "Wow, my mom was right. If I eat a lot of junk, I will ruin my dinner."
She laughed with the appreciation only a mother can get when realizing that in motherworld, something finally clicked. She finished her laugh then said "Yeah, you probably didn't believe her then because you thought you had an iron stomach, but that stomach isn't so strong now, is it?"
We shared a good laugh over that one and she sent me home with some motherly advice to forget the piece of pizza, drink gingerale and eat crackers instead. Oh, and a directive to re-assess all of those things my mom said that I rolled my eyes at when I was a kid!

When I went on my first date when I was 18, my dad said "Keep your legs crossed." I rolled my eyes, and then just started to laugh. He didn't laugh, he was serious. I took his advice.
