Way back in the olden days there were places called Gas Works. In these works coal was processed by burning in order to drive out the gas that it contained. At the same time many many more by products were made. One of them is/was creosote. The residue of the coal were lumps of coke. These were dark grey rather than black and had the appearance and texture of a fine breeze block though not such a regular shape. It was also lighter by volume than the coal. Coke was then sold as a smokeless fuel at a much lower price than coal. Once it was heated in an open fire place it gave off a very good heat. All before the advent of central heating although subsequently solid fuel heating boilers were made to burn coke.
