If it's a standard tranny, there is usually a fill plug over the drain plug on the tranny. You just pull the top plug and stick your finger in the hole and check it.
Since there's no place for manual tranny oil to go, it shouldn't be low. You should change it every 50k miles.
If it's an auto, there is a dipstick.

When checking transmission fluid the car should be on level ground and running. Pull the dipstick, wipe it off, reinsert the stick and pull it again. Should be in the crosshatches between low and full which will be marked. If you need to add some, check on the dipstick some newer Ford cars require ATF+4, some require Mercron 5 and some require regular Dexron 3, but it will say which fluid on the side of the stick usually around midway up the stick. If it isn't there you can look in your owner's manual, under fluid capacities and type or ask at your local parts store.
