If Americans embraced the idea that saving energy was truly patriotic, downsized our next car as much as would be practical, used efficient lighting, weatherproofed our homes, turned the heat down and the AC up when possible, it would be a good start.
Developing any other hydro, nuclear, wind and solar power sources will have to come later. It would be difficult, but it's something we really should keep in mind, and work towards.
When gas prices shot up last year I bought a cheep little used car that uses half as much gas as my pick-up, so my fuel cost didn't go up. I heat my house with a modern low emission catalytic wood stove and only use my furnace is only a back-up.
If the automobile industry wasn't linked to the oil industry they would develop electric cars, and bio diesel vehicles.
(Hydrogen power is nothing but a bogus alternative cooked up to distract people away from electric vehicles.)

I'm assuming you mean oil independent? Energy independent just means lazy. lol.

The keys are to trend toward bridging the gap between our demand and our supply.

How can we do this?

First off encourage energy conservation. Through incentives to manufacturers to make more gas efficient automobiles, hybrid vehicles and the like. Offer incentives to consumers to buy these vehicles.

Secondly by aggressively using renewable resources like wind, solar, hydro power. Again use incentives to aggressively push building of infrastructure for these.

Finally more research into future possibilities such as hydrogen power.

I think conservation can make a huge impact on our demand.

use ethanol. Brazil uses exactly no gasoline to power its automobiles. they use it for other purposes but since vehicles consume so much, its a very effective alternative, and we can see that its working for brazil.
