A., Privacy, B., reaction, and C., liability.

(A.) The dentist can coach the patient on the proper care of teeth, mom is just a nag. The dentist wants the patient to be as comfortable and at ease as possible, having mom lurking won't make the patient comfortable or at ease. (B.) The dentist is used to seeing yucky teeth, before and after drilling; mom is not. Also the dentist knows not to cringe whenever the needles and drills are coming, but mom does not. Finally, there are (C.) liability issues- they might include: 1) if mom gets hurt somehow in the dentist's office, the insurance company is going to ask why she was in the work space, and 2) if something wrong happens during a procedure, there isn't a second story for the jury to hear in court.
