My friend owns and operates a resort, their website loads up very slowly. I have decreased the size of the jpeg file, also created a preload command. What else can I do so that the site speeds up for those trying to view it? This site has a javascript menu, could this be one of the reasons it is running so slow?

You may need to provide additional information before you can get an answer..

Is the website only slow on your computer ?

Have you cleaned out your cache and reloaded the site to get the exact speed at which it would load on any other system that is new to the site..

How did you write the site? HTML dreamweaver or frontpage etc ?

WAY too long! A home page (or any landing page) should load in 1-3 seconds. You are trying to put, say and show everything on the home page. Big mistake! And, for a first time visitor, the question we ask is "What is this site ABOUT?" Review the whole: you are a long way to make a successful website. And REMOVE any ads (waste of time if you have less than 20,000 visitors a month (and it takes YOUR visitors away...)

try turning the jpegs into gifs. You may lose a little resolution, but it should be minimal.

Also, if there are a lot of pics, you may want to find a way to reduce them. Maybe one pic that takes you to a new page with the others...maybe thumbnails.

Here's a great link to test the load time.

Hope that helps

I dont know a lot about web pages but if the site is large with lots of graphics and the connection is slow, that could be the reason.

you can find a lighter java script here http://www.dynamicdrive.com/
the one you have is probably slowing things down. also look for a javascript menu that doesn't use images. if yours has to load images for all the buttons that'll take time too.
